Aspectos Relevantes / Relevant aspects: Our largely photographic collection documents the history of Otautau & Districts. Featured on eHive is a small selection of the items we have available at our Museum, where we have revolving displays on various theme's of our Town & District History.
Servicios / Services: We also have a growing collection of family history resources along with local area archives, featuring Businesses, Community Groups, Sports Clubs, Recreational Activities, Local Council History, Schools & Educational Facilities and more.
Historia / History: The Otautau Museum is housed in the old Otautau Courthouse.Tenders for a brick design were finally called for in April 1908, and a tender for between £1,100 and £1,200 given to contractors Thomson & Georgeson of Invercargill, who moved their factory and entire families to Otautau to undertake the contract. They began construction in June 1908. In the early 1980s the Justice Department declared the courthouse was surplus to its requirements. The Wallace County Council eventually acquired it and used it for the Otautau Library. Later it was sold to the Otautau Heritage Trust. It was used for meetings, exhibitions, and workshops by the Otautau & District Creative Arts Trust and the Otautau Museum Trust and according to the museum is one of Otautau’s oldest buildings. In 2018, the Heritage Trust and Museum Trusts combined into one Otautau Museum and Heritage Trust, both owning the building and running the Museum.
